Victoria Street— Cambridge

5th Studio has a portfolio of award-winning private residential projects which combine spatial and material richness with tectonic rigour. These small-scale projects formed a key part of our work in the early years of the practice, and allowed us to test and realise ideas about spaces for contemporary living.

Our work is always rooted in the physical – the enjoyment of materials and the exploration of the rich qualities of the substance of building, exploiting the possibilities of modern calculation and manufacture to reveal these qualities in a contemporary manner.

This remaking of a victorian house was winner of the RIBA National & Regional Awards 2003, and longlisted for the Manser Medal. It was also shortlisted for the Stephen Lawrence Award, an award recognises outstanding projects worth less than £350,000.

"From a modest low budget brief, the architects have transformed a tiny terraced house into a seminal piece of architecture. They have also transformed the life of its owner. She is absolutely ecstatic … The architects should be highly commended for the cleverness and sensitivity of their solution … they have fundamentally challenged domestic renovation … An absolute delight."
