We are committed to the politics & technics of sustainable design - and are determined that environmental sustainability should be fully integrated within all our projects. We engage with environmental sustainability from the beginning of a project, an approach based on belief in the value of innovative and strategic - rather than bolt-on- technological measures. We prefer to find quiet but effective design strategies.

The construction industry accounts for almost 40% of energy-related emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2). Carbon emissions produced through these construction activity have a major impact on the climate and on biodiversity. For everyone working in the construction industry, meeting the needs of our society without breaching the earth’s ecological boundaries will demand a paradigm shift in our behaviour. Together with our clients, we will need to commission and design buildings, cities and infrastructures as indivisible components of a larger, constantly regenerating and self-sustaining system.

5th Studio are actively taking part in sustainable agendas at all scales, from shaping strategy to delivering award-winning built exemplars. Our commitments to carbon emission reduction include:

  • Founding signers of Architects Declare;
  • Signing up to the RIBA’s 2030 challenge, to meet net-zero carbon for new and retrofitted buildings by 2030;
  • Proponents of Retrofit First;
  • Membership of the ‘Edge’ – a cross-disciplinary sustainability think-tank;
  • Enacting regular project sustainability audits;
  • Committed to reducing our Scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions to zero by 2030; and
  • Applying for B-Corp accreditation.

We strive to minimise the environmental impact of the masterplans and buildings that we design and encourage our clients to adhere to these principles. We aim to exceed our clients’ aspirations in terms of environmental sustainability and social impact; providing guidance, design advice and information so our clients can make informed holistic decisions about the long and short-term environmental and social impact of the buildings, landscapes and urban settings they are commissioning.
